What's Going on With Children's Television? Why is it Not Like Television of the 80s and 90's?

Television in the 1980's and 1990's

Remember growing up in the 80's and 90's? Most of us only had one television in the house and we were lucky if we had cable, let alone the premium channels. Remember, the Disney channel was a premium channel at one time. But when we were off from school, or after school, or Saturday mornings, our screens were filled with images of Mr. Rogers, Shining Time Station, Square One (a personal favorite), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, WWF Wrestling, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego etc. These were great shows and many of them were not pure entertainment. We actually could learn something from these shows. Plus, we didn't have a ton of options. PBS was the go to for after school television, until Charlie Rose came on. Poor choice of words. Look it up kids. Anyway, I still have fond memories of those shows. And remember our go to television on sick days: The Price is Right and whatever soap opera our mom was watching (The Young and the Restless for me). But now that I have my own children, I've been bombarded with some of the dumbest television program known to ever exist. I've already written about Blippi so I will skip him for now. The only thing that I'll say is at least he's teaching letters and colors. My kids are now onto a show based on the film Boss Baby. It's pure and utter nonsense. It's more complicated than a Stanley Kubrick film and the dialogue is something out of an elementary school drama class. I've also been fortunate enough to watch, not on purpose of course, many of the shows that come from Russia and China that populate the kids section of Netflix, Paramount and the other streaming services. I am about seventy five percent sure that these shows are brainwashing my kids. Much like TikTok! I'm only half joking. What's even worse is that kids love repetition so I watch the same episodes of these shows over and over again. Now, there are some exceptions to this trash television. Apple TV has a wonderful Snoopy show that I find delightful. Snoopy does make me laugh and I have a soft spot in my heart for that lovable beagle and his blockhead owner. A recent film that came out, Lyle, based upon the book, is also an enjoyable children's film. Mostly because of the acting talents of Javier Bardem. I have tried to expose my children to Mr. Rogers but because it doesn't have any computer animation and flashy graphics, they're not interested. I mean, what is not flashy about the neighborhood of make believe? And that trolley was dope as hell, to use a 90's term. So what happened? I think that a lot of creators of these programs became lazy and figured that mindless entertainment is easier to make. Or maybe it's just too difficult to make old fashioned television "cool" without the graphics. Either way, it's driving me nuts. But I'd like to end on a positive note; my oldest daughter does enjoy the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, and so do I.
