Good Grief: Is George Costanza a Grown Up Charlie Brown?

I've been on a Seinfeld kick lately and as an older adult, I have come to appreciate the humor that the show presents. Much of it comes from the misfortune of George Costanza, a short, stocky, bald everyman that many of us can relate to. The misadventures of George are relatable to many of us middle aged men. Whether is be trying to find how to keep a job doing the least amount of work possible or preventing an attractive young lady from breaking up with us by ignoring their calls, George is the embodiment of the middle aged man. But does he also have something in common with a character that many of us grew up with, a Charles "Chuck" Brown. Widely known as Charlie Brown, this young man represents a misanthropic archetype of the lovable loser. Charlie Brown is constantly the butt of jokes and is often duped at the expense of others. Even his own dog doesn't take him seriously nor know his name. Man's best friend my ass. What would be interesting to see is a grown up Charlie Brown. Perhaps we do have one in the form of George Costanza. Both are lovable losers, although George may not be as lovable. What I can say is that both are much loved characters. And why is that? Because they are both relatable. Many of us were Charlie Brown as children. Nothing seemed to go our way. We never got the girl, were made the butt of jokes, and always had that one friend who stuck with us. Linus for Charlie Brown, Jerry for George. Charlie Brown also has the uncanny ability to not do anything right. The most famous example of this is his selection of the ugliest Christmas tree in Merry Christmas Charlie Brown. George, being the cheapskate that he is, selected wedding invitations that contained toxic glue. But hey, they were cheap! George and Charlie also have similar physical features, mainly in their baldness. What is it with this discrimination against bald men? I mean, I have not gone bald yet but still, I lay awake at night thinking one day I will be. Society is cruel to the bald ones. Getting back on track, I can certainly see George as a grown up Charlie Brown. Popular sentiment says that George is based on Seinfeld co creator, and fellow curmudgeon Larry David. I can see that but I can also see him as Mr. Brown. We can all relate to Charlie Brown as children. He might be the perfect representation of our youth, which may turn us into jaded adults like George. But just remember that in the end, Charlie Brown ends up winning the affections of his peers, even his dog. While this doesn't really happen to George, one can hope that he found happiness in the world. Serenity now! Insanity later....Good Grief.
